Secret Origins was originally published in comic book form in DC Comics's Green Lantern (volume 4) issues #29-35. This new edition, which has been reprinted in preparation for the release of the 2011 Green Lantern movie, also includes a few "movie preview" pages which includes photos of some of the movie's characters as well as some words on the movie by Geoff Johns and two Green Lantern editors.

The story opens with Hal in awe of his father's job as a test pilot. Hal is there the fateful day his father's plane crashes and he is killed in front of his son's eyes. From that point on Hal's mother forbids him from going anywhere near an airfield - something he ignores, eventually becoming a test pilot himself. When one day an alien vessel crash lands on Earth, its dying pilot charges Hal with taking over his role in the Green Lantern Corps, becoming Earth's defender.
