MovieScore Media releases Daniel Pemberton's original score for the BBC’s spy series The Game. The six-episode spy thriller reignites the Cold War as the head of MI5 codenamed Daddy sets up a secret committee to investigate a Soviet plot. Operation Glass, which is revealed by a leaving KGB officer, involves a sleeper agent in Britain who is about to be re-activated as part of a secret mission. Each episode of the series follows the investigation of a possible traitor / sleeper agent...

Daniel Pemberton's score for the BBC's spy series The Game, harks back to the sound of '60s/'70s spy movies. The majority of the tracks feature strings, bass flutes, cimbalom and drums to evoke the classic jazz sound of early spy thrillers such as The Ipcress File (John Barry) and The Conversation (David Shire).

Pemberton also incorporates a sampled oscilloscope with an out of tune trombone as well as heavily treated scraped piano strings in order to create a sonic world which pays tribute to the whole spy jazz genre, but bring the old sound kicking and screaming into the modern day. It's a sound that works well, and was recently also explored by Guy Farley with his score for Hot Potato.

There are plenty of John Barry-esque moments in this album's 22 tracks (54 min, 22 sec), most notably, the half-way point of 'Titles and Opening' which will reminded many of Barry's early James Bond scores.

It's a rich, lavish score and certainly one I'd advise lovers of classic spy scores to pick up. It's worth buying for the main theme - which is woven throughout the album - alone.
