Nobody Knows Anything

Artist: Alex Highton
Label: Gare Du Nord
RRP: £13.99
Release Date: 08 December 2014

Following on from Alex HIghton's well received debut album, Woodditton Wives Club, comes Nobody Knows Anything. Whilst the first release allowed Highton to tackle observational material he wanted to get off his chest, his new material sees him turn on himself. He states that when writing the album it was very much a way of trying to work out the point of everything. He admits that he hasn't got a clue and nobody has. He adds that the Richard Dawkins advert that was on the side of London buses for a while: ‘There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life,’ is probably were it’s at...

"I get pissed off with the certainties presented to me by religions and politicians, says Highton. "In fact I did record it with the loose idea that these songs were the thoughts running through someone’s head just before they die. It’s certainly structured in that way.”

The album opens with 'You Don't Own This Life' which reminded me a lot of Radiohead's 'Paranoid Android' (from their 1997 album OK Computer). In fact there's quite a bit of the spirit of Radiohead running through the tracks on this album. Just listen to 'Panic' and you'll instantly spot the same vibe.

Over this album's 13 tracks (48 min, 33 sec) other highlights include 'She Had This Sister'; 'Fear'; and the closing track, 'It's'.

It's an interesting folk album, that's just mainstream enough to appeal to those that normally don't enjoy folk.
