The fantastical, whimsical, and sometimes mischievous nature of Paul Kopetz’s Mythical Creatures, features a song cycle on the poetry of Svyetlana Hadgraft and a variety of inspired portraits. Each of the 10 movements is a musical impression of a mythical creature that has existed in the folklore of various cultures around the world since the beginning of time. With emotionally broad music that highlights Kopetz’s remarkable compositional range, there’s something for everyone in this release, especially for those with a penchant for the characteristic vocal works of the 20th century...

Before I even listened to this release I was intrigued - almost immediately hooked - by the focus on mythical creatures. And I have to admit that I was not disappointed. The album's 10 movements (split over 13 tracks - 1 hr, 03 min, 56 sec) are rich, diverse and instantly accessible. However, if I had one quibble - and this is just my personal view - I didn't really associate any of the music with the creatures they were based around.

Well, with the possible exception of 'Coyote' which briefly brought to mind images of Wile E. Coyote from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of animated cartoons. I don't know if that was intentional or just me.

However, that's not really an issue - not even in the slightest. What we have here is a collection of classical pieces that work incredibly well together to showcase composer Paul Kopetz’s ability to write engaging and memorable works that resonate on an emotional level. And, if you come to this release with an open mind, you'll find this album to be charming, and rewarding on so many levels.
