The original documentary soundtrack for Robert et le Diable, by composer Maximilien Mathevon, is available via Plaza Mayor Company. The legend of Robert and the Devil has spanned the centuries: the story of this son of the Devil, initially violent and merciless before embarking on the path to redemption upon learning of his origins, has inspired writers, poets, playwrights and musicians... Maximilien Mathevon's score for the documentary Robert et le Diable has a wonderfully medieval air about it. There's also a flavour of horror movies like The Omen. This is another of Mathevon's works of art which stands on its own two feet as a glorious collection of subtle, beautiful thematic pieces. Discussing the project, Mathevon says: "For the music of Robert et le Diable, I created a disturbing main theme for Robert, declined in different variations and orchestrations: viola da gamba, dulcimer, alto flute, violins, cello, brass… I also composed several other recurring themes, notably that of redemption and that of the Vatican. I gave part of the music a medieval colour corresponding to the origin of the myth of Robert. Above all, I took great pleasure in using the techniques and codes of horror film music, a genre that I particularly like." Over the course of these 16 tracks (36 min, 11 sec) Mathevon paints a vivid picture with his score. You can feel the horror and suspense in tracks like 'La Legende de Robert de Robert le Diable', 'Violence et Pelerinage' and 'Guerres Mondiales'. There's also a softer, melancholic feel to tracks like 'Theme de L'expiation' and 'Le Vatican Decide'. It's another impressive score from Mathevon, who showcases his ability to compose music for the horror genre with beautifully layered themes that stay with you. 9 Darren Rea Buy this item online
