Maximilien Mathevon delivers the score for the original documentary La Cancalaise & Les Vieux Crabes, which is available via Plaza Mayor Company Ltd. The film focuses on La Cancalaise, a 40-year-old working replica of an oyster fishing boat that sailed in the last century. The vessel has been cared for by a group of loyal enthusiasts, and the documentary is set during the six-month winter lay-up, when the workshop members volunteer their time to maintain this lady of wood and sails to ensure the future of the boat for generations to come...

Maximilien Mathevon delivers 12 tracks (30 min, 39 sec) that beautifully encapsulate the present and the past of the replica fishing boat La Cancalaise. It's an electronic album that has all the hallmarks of an orchestral production. If only orchestras weren't so expensive, I can only imagine how incredibly rousing this score would be if given the full orchestral arrangement it so clearly deserves. As it stands, it's an outstanding collection of emotionally charged themes and set pieces.

Mathevon evokes history and warmth throughout this release. The boat has its own personality and moving themes that draw the listener in. I particularly loved the three-part 'Ode a La Cancalaise'. So many images and ideals are conveyed through the composer's work.

This is another wonderfully rich score from Mathevon.
