Matt Groening's latest animated series, Futurama, may
have been cancelled, but fans who want more stories from the
future can take consolation in the fact that Titan are publishing
a series of graphic novels based around the animated series
set in the year 3000...
Futurama-o-rama
brings
together Fry, Leela, Bender and the rest of the gang at Planet
Express Pizza delivery as they fight giant mutant sea monkeys,
avoid intergalactic robot space pirates, collect the collectibles
of doom and attempt to rescue Zapp Branigan from the jungle
planet of Da Nang.
The
artwork in this collection is pretty much on a par with the
illustrations of the TV series - which too be honest is not
too hard to achieve as, like The Simpsons, the drawings
are fairly basic. Where this collection comes in to its own
is the quality of the writing. This graphic novel contains
four original stories which are all as good as, or in the
case of ...But Deliver us From Evil and The Owner
of Mars Attacks!, better than anything the show has given
us. In fact, it is not unfair to say that if Groening had
sacked his writing staff and instead employed the talents
of Eric Rogers then Futurama may have had as long a
life as The Simpsons.
There
are countless nods to other movies including Gremlins,
Back to the Future, and Mars Attacks. There is
also a panel which pokes fun at that well known Simpsons
wanna be The Family Guy.
Again,
Titan Publishing has pulled out all the stops to provide an
incredibly well presented publication: lovely glossy cover,
good quality paper and at £8.99 the 118 pages are great
value for money. A
must buy for Groening fans.
