The ultimate conquering force has been unleashed upon the
universe and is heading towards Earth, leaving a path of devastation
in its wake. With the fate of the world at stake, the Man
of Steel is forced into uneasy alliances with both heroes
and villains, including the lethal Darkseid, Mongul, and his
earthly nemesis - President Lex Luthor...
Superman:
Our Worlds at War is
the first in a two part collection which sees Superman battling
against a force he can never win alone.
There
is also a thread of "ain't America great" throughout
this volume, with a number of historical speeches including
President Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor Speech and President Lincoln's
Gettysburg Address. While the speeches are included to show
how bad wars are, it really comes across as patriotic American
arrogance.
This
volume shows what a namby pamby, American dream superhero
Superman actually is. After the Kent's home is destroyed The
Man of Steel can find nothing of his adoptive parents, but
does unearth another one of his uniforms (made by his aunt)
with a note which reads. "In case of emergency. We love
you xxx." To which Supergirl observes "She actually
makes those for you? I have to buy mine. Not even wholesale."
Ignore
the 'America the great' theme (which is always hard with Superman
material) and you have, at its core, a graphic novel of great
complexity. A classic collection.
