Three years after the apparent death of Bruce Wayne and the
revelation to the entire World that he was really the Batman,
Our winged hero appears to be making a comeback. And with
a new, younger Catwoman as his partner against crime, Batman
continues to set the world to rights. He seems to be doing
just that until the previously believed dead Joker appears
on the scene intent on spoiling Batty's comeback...
Following
on from the events that unfolded in Frank Miller's The
Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again sees
a pensionable Bruce Wayne returning to strike fear into the
criminals of Gotham City in a bid to make the streets safe
for the law abiding citizens.
This
collection never quite recaptures the magic of the Dark
Knight Returns and to be honest bringing Wayne back was
probably a mistake. Maybe
The Dark Knight Returns would have been the most fitting
conclusion to the Bat saga. The Dark Knight Strikes Back
tries to introduce a twist ending, but this is obvious and
gives the whole collection a rushed movie adaptation feel.
Following
on from the JLA theme that was hinted at in The Dark Knight
Returns, there are more references included here about
the downfall of the Superhero club and why mankind cannot
accept that heroes with superpowers should be left to their
own devices.
This
collection has some pretty bizarre single panel character
illustrations - including a young Batman fan and a leading
psychoanalyst who seem to have stepped out of a young child's
nightmare.
This
is still an interesting graphic novel and a must have for
any Bat freak.
