Superman has been hospitalised by a mysterious illness.
Now a team of S.T.A.R. lab doctors, aided by some of Superman's
closest friends, both human and superhuman, must race to save
the Man of Steel before the unthinkable happens...
While
Critical
Condition
is a Superman graphic novel his absence, for around 50% of
the book, changes the focus greatly centring on Supergirl,
Superboy and The Atom as they try to save the Man of Steel's
life from an unexplained disease.
This
collection benefits from the fact that the reader doesn't
really need to know a great deal about Superman in order to
pick up this collection and enjoy it. If you know who Superman,
Batman, Lois Lane and The Atom are then you won't be left
scratching your head trying to work out the loose ends of
previous plot threads left unresolved.
The
story, while stretched a little, is entertaining enough and
the collection of artists brought in do the script justice.
Batman fans will also be glad to hear that their favourite
miserable vigilante makes a brief appearance - there is also
some much needed light relief in the scenes that the two share.
