Metropolis's new champion must defend his adopted city from
the threat of Metallo while at the same time keeping his civilian
identity secret from the man who runs the city - billionaire
businessman Lex Luthor. Along the way he meets television
journalist Cat Grant - a reporter who's more interested personally
in Clark Kent than in his alter ego. And if that wasn't enough,
after crossing paths with the Teen Titans and the Phantom
Stranger, Superman must journey to Apokolips to confront the
ultimate evil - Darkseid...
In
1986, on the eve of Superman's 50th birthday, DC Comics
engineered a dramatic revamping of the character, along with
his friends, his foes, and his city. Now, for the first time,
the early chapters of Superman's dramatic relaunch
are collected in this paperback release.
While
this is obviously not really going to appeal to anyone other
than Superman fans, there is a lot to recommend this
collection. The writing steps up a notch (by Superman
standards) and the artwork has an almost retro feel to it.
Unfortunately,
Lex Luthor and the rest of Metropolis are still as thick as
ever! Even when confronted with the fact that Superman and
Clark Kent are one in the same... Luthor refuses to believe
it! Hello! They are identical! Although, to be fair, they
do a good job of explaining why no one has ever really seen
a picture of Superman's face.
Sadly
these reprints are simply the same quality as the original
comics with a glossy cover attached. It would have been great
(although I'm not sure how feasible this would be) to have
reprinted them on better quality paper and used the original
artwork to run better colour copies than the ink dot mess
that is offered.
A
worth addition to any Superman fan's collection.
