A shoot out in a secret laboratory leads to the escape of
a giant fungus and the beginning of a plague of frogs. The
Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense must stop a madman
from completing the doomsday work begun by the deranged monk
Rasputin in the original Hellboy book Seed
of Destruction...
Plague
of Frogs is
another impressive collection from the B.P.R.D. (Bureau
for Paranormal Research and Defense) vaults. Following on
from The
Soul of Venice & Other Stories and Hollow
Earth & Other Stories, this graphic novel
consists of one long tale - instead of a collection of stories
that the other releases have offered.
I
found this collection to be more enjoyable for that reason.
While it's nice to be able to dip in and out of a collection,
there's nothing like deeper character development and spending
a bit of time setting the scene. Plague of Frogs does
this well and it's good to see Hellboy and B.P.R.D.
creator, Mike Mignola finally writing for this series based
on his characters. Abe Sapien fans are also in for a bit of
a treat, as this collection examines his origins.
Guy Davis's art work is also worthy of note. He seems to be
just as at home depicting Victorian street scenes as he is
writhing, horrific monsters.
The
only complaint I have, and this is a small one, is that there
seemed to be too many instances were this collection plugged
past collections (a bit like this review is doing). In one
instance there were references made to three past collections
over a two page spread. Now, I know that this collection may
be picked up by people who have never read a Hellboy
or B.P.R.D. story before, but I though this was a little
overkill on the hard sell.
Otherwise,
a faultless collection.
