Buddy
Baker, AKA Animal Man, is able to take on the characteristics
of any creature he comes within a few metres of. After some
time away from high-profile heroics, he decides to get back
into costume. Unlike most super heroes he doesn't keep his
true identity a secret and the fact that he has a wife and
two children makes him an easy target for super villains...
This
first collection of Animal Man stories sees Buddy changing
from a super hero that takes the animal powers for mankind's
good to one that slowly becomes aware that animals need his
help too.
Chapter
five was my personal favourite story, bringing Grant Morrison's
sense of humour out to its full potential. The Coyote Gospel,
while not really fitting in with the rest of the series, takes
a refreshing break from the less humourous stories that proceeded
it. Here we see the other side to Wile E Coyote that we were
never privy too in all those Road Runner cartoons -
he has feelings too you know! Hilarious.
While
the collection is not given the usual Titan magic touch (glossy
pages, beautiful reproduction) it is still a nice collection
of nine very different stories - although they do inter-link.
Not
a bad collection at all.
