In the future, Strontium-90 nuclear fallout has created a
sub-race of mutants and freaks, despised and mistreated by
'norms' - humans unaffected by the radiation. Seen as fit
for only one kind of work, some mutants have become bounty
hunters - or Strontium Dogs.
Johnny Alpha is one such mutant...
Those
familiar with Jonny's exploits in 2000AD will relish
the chance to discover Alpha's creation. Portrait of a
Mutant is a 19-part story which explains everything you
need to know about Alpha's upbringing and why his father hated
him so much. There is also a very funny seven part story which
features Adolf Hitler.
With
the excellent Big Finish Strontium Dog audio productions
having been recently released this graphic novel will help
fill new fans of the origins of one of 2000AD's greatest
characters.
There
is also a brief appearance from a young Middenface McNulty
The
artwork is Carlos
Ezquerra at his best - although one thing about this artist
which has always frustrated me is that his images of men all
look the same, so there were a couple of pages where it appeared
that Johnny's father was being shot when in fact it was just
a guard. Another small gripe I had was the quality of the
paper this book was printed on, which made it look like an
old 1980s bad photocopy.
But,
those minor moans aside this is an enjoyable read which will
appeal to both long standing fans and those coming to the
series for the first time.
Solid
story telling from beginning to end.
