Legendary mascot Sonic the Hedgehog makes his historic multi-platform debut. Sonic and his friends have evolved, adopting a configuration feature that lets gamers control three playable characters simultaneously: Sonic's speed, Knuckles' power and Tails' ability to fly can now be used to conquer massive worlds...

Sonic Heroes allows you to take control of Team Sonic (made up of Sonic, Tales and Knuckles) or any one of a number of other teams comprised of three characters - each with the special ability of speed, power of flight. There are a total of 12 characters that make up Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose and Team Chaotix, each with their own signature moves and story line.

Ah.... Sonic the Hedgehog. He was to the Megadrive what the Mario Brothers were to the SNES, or to a lesser extent what Lara Croft was to the Playstation. However, this is an abject lesson on why we should let memories of the past remain as such. Sonic was a fantastic character on the Megadrive, but this new offering tries to be too many things and ends up looking a little too messy.

Sonic Heroes seems half finished. The camera seems to have a mind of its own. And changing between normal camera and your character's point of view camera doesn't help matters.

I don't know about you, but when I spend £40 for a game I don't want to spend half my time wondering why my character has just run off a cliff for no reason, or why I seem to have no control over the gameplay as my character seems to bounce around for ages with a mind of its own.

You're also strongly advised to start of on the tutorial mode instead of trying to head straight for the main gaming area. There are plenty of little bits of information here you'll need in order to complete the levels successfully.

Once you get into the gameplay, it soon becomes apparent that there isn't much to this game. The levels all look pretty similar and the graphics are not a patch on similar games.

There are much better games of a similar vein out there - take Ratchet and Clank for starters. But, if you really want to relive those glory days when Sonic was king, buy a Megadrive on e-Bay and play the original game. It'll be cheaper and more fun than this offering.

A little disappointing considering what this could have been.
