Featuring music from Stanley Kubrick's films including
2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut, this album is an updated version of Silva Screen's 1999 release...

The funny thing about compilation albums is that I never really know who their intended market is. As a soundtrack fan I normally try and get hold of the complete soundtrack to a film if I like it and if it is available. But I'm very rarely drawn to compilation albums unless it is a collection of a composer I am fond of.

Sadly, this release re-emphasises why I don't particularly enjoy compilation albums on the whole. The music chosen is usually selected on the basis of copyright issues (which films are available to take the music from) and an individual, or small group of people, who decides which tracks actually make it to the finished cut.

Obviously this album had to include music from 2001: A Space Odyssey... but why on earth do we get the same old themes trotted out yet again? Richard Strauss's Sprach Zarathustra and On the Beautiful Blue Danube are so common place that most people will probably skip these tracks. I must have at least half a dozen albums with these compositions on.

But the worst inclusion has to be the butchering of Beethoven's Ode to Joy from A Clockwork Orange. Sure it works in the movie, but as a stand alone track it is awful.

Handel's Sarabande from Barry Lyndon is about the best track on this collection - but Levi also borrowed it recently for one of their advertising campaigns, so most people (sadly) will associate the music with jeans rather than the movie.

What we end up with is a mix of dull and mediocre music that you've either heard a million times before, or will find instantly forgettable. One for Kubrick fanatics only.
